Deformation Technology


Our high resolution deformation (DEF) tool provides pipeline operators with an easy and efficient way to detect minute bore reductions — including dents, expansions, ovalities, wrinkles, and misalignments — down to the slightest change in the pipeline’s internal diameter.

DEF technology is designed to measure expansion as small as 0.5 percent of a pipe’s nominal outer diameter (OD) and has demonstrated a 0.15 percent sizing accuracy.

The high resolution data produced by DEF technology is also useful for dent strain calculations, which help you determine anomaly severity beyond simple dent depth. And because our deformation capabilities exceed industry requirements, they provide operators with a way to better manage pipeline integrity, reduce dig costs, and maintain compliance.

Best used for: pipelines 4 inches to 48 inches in diameter

  • How is this technology able to accurately detect expansions and wrinkles? DEF arms are designed to expand beyond the OD of the pipe, and thus are able to track the internal pipe wall at expansions and wrinkles.
