Special Application Pigs

Special Application Pigs

As their name suggests, specialty pigs enable pipeline owners and operators to perform unique cleaning or maintenance services.

In order to help combat corrosion in pipelines of all ages, from new construction to legacy lines, TDW provides two designed-for-purpose specialty pigs that distribute corrosion inhibitor on the entire pipe wall – even the top, an area that other pigs miss, leaving gaps in protection. By injecting a more complete coating of corrosion inhibitors into the pipelines, the V-Jet® corrosion inhibitor pig and VXP corrosion inhibitor pig shield better against pipeline damage.

Best used for: chemical corrosion mitigation.

Key features:

  • Available in a wide range of sizes, from 4 inches through 28 inches in diameter.
  • Works on the dynamics of bypass flow and differential pressure: vacuums up residual corrosion inhibitor from the bottom of the pipe wall, vaporizes it, and sprays it onto the inside top portion of the pipe.
  • No moving parts or pressure vessels to fill and charge.
  • Sealing cups molded from tough urethane ensure durability and long life.

FAQs:

  • What size pipelines can the V-Jet and VXP corrosion inhibitor pigs navigate? The V-Jet corrosion inhibitor pig is sized for pipelines ranging from 10 inches through 28 inches. The VXP corrosion inhibitor pig can be deployed in pipelines ranging from 4 inches through 12 inches.
  • Is the V-Jet pig used only for corrosion control? No. In addition to being used for inhibitor injection, the V-Jet pig can be used as a stand-alone dewatering pig or in batching mode, with a slug of inhibitor separating it from a batching pig that runs ahead. It has also been successful in final chemical cleaning operations, removing scale from the pipe’s top inner wall.

Injection or batching of corrosion inhibitor fluid is an essential part of a maintenance program aimed at reducing pipeline deterioration. Unfortunately, gravity often forces inhibitor to settle along the bottom of the pipe, leaving the top vulnerable.
