Get the best of all worlds.
Spiral Magnetic Flux Leakage (SMFL) is a patent pending technology designed to detect long, narrow defects in a pipe body and long seam welds. Conventional axial Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) tools detect volumetric pipeline anomalies, general corrosion and wide circumferential flaws. Transverse Field Inspection (TFI) tools detect general corrosion as well as long and narrow metal loss features. SMFL tools create a diagonally flowing, 45-degree magnetic field that, when used in conjunction with an axial inspection tool, provides precise characterization of the full range of metal loss features, whether general, circumferential or extremely narrow. That gives you the best of all worlds.
High resolution SMFL technology offers a number of benefits:
• TFI typically relies on two magnetizers, but SMFL requires just one
• One magnetizer allows SMFL to be paired with MFL without extending tool length
• Pairing tools generates multiple datasets in one run
• Multiple datasets are overlaid during analysis to
enhance anomaly characterization
• Improved defect discrimination can eliminate unnecessary excavations
