Technical Writer - Salt Lake City, Utah


TDW MAGIPIE® is a company specializing in Magnetic Pipeline Inspection Systems for the Petroleum industry. We are experiencing growth in both our domestic and global operations. As a growing company TDW MAGPIE is seeking energetic and experienced professionals for the following position:

BASIC FUNCTION:

Develops written content for technical communications. This includes assembly instructions and manuals, operations & maintenance manuals, formal process and procedure instructions and training material.  Facilitates the translation of projects into foreign languages as required.

ABILITIES

  • Consults with engineering, systems, and field technicians, managers and engineering personnel as required to produce and maintain tool assembly documentation, operations and maintenance manuals, instruction sheets and other related technical publications.
  • Stays abreast of TDW equipment detail, operating procedures, maintenance and service, product technologies and processes through observing development and experimental activities. Communicates to the customer through specification sheets and other product related documentation.
  • Ensures that technical publications are appropriately reviewed for compliance to TDW policies and approved by appropriate technical, engineering, and legal areas where applicable prior to publishing. Serves as the Technical Review Committee coordinator, assuring the process is effectively executed.  Leads department’s effort to comply with the established records retention program.
  • Completes a variety of writing assignments including press releases, new product releases, news and trade articles, advertising/promotional material, product specifications.
  • Captures critical assembly information, via CAD drawings, digital pictures, and other means to communicate all aspects of documenting tool configuration.
  • Edits and reviews all technical materials for accurate content, integrity and style. Provides the leadership required to refine all written messages to be simple, concise and complete. Translates communication projects into foreign languages as required.
  • Completes other projects as assigned by the manager, this includes special projects as well as process improvement within the department.

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS

Reports to the Engineering Management. Works closely with engineers and technical support personnel, product and service managers, Interfaces with TDW operations personnel and external vendors.

REQUIRMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree is a plus but not required.  Minimum two years related experience technical writing and marketing.  Knowledge of public relations and an understanding of mechanical assemblies is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills; excellent grammar and problem solving required. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal. Must be team player demonstrating attitudes that will help build and maintain a healthy team environment. Foreign Language a plus, (French and Spanish).
  • Strong PC and word processing skills.  Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint at the Intermediate Level, plus experience in Adobe Acrobat and OCR (optical character recognition) software. Understanding of scanning and image manipulation and Photoshop a plus.
