New Service

Product changes, flow reversals, and service conversions are complex undertakings that require considerable pipeline expertise. TDW provides a full suite of solutions for these unique processes, including line cleaning and batching, facilitating line modifications, and inline inspection services — along with the necessary equipment.

TDW solutions allow operators in the Offshore Pipeline market to:

  • Thoroughly clean the line before product changes and maintain a barrier between product types during the transition in services.
  • Assess and address new line requirements.
  • Protect people, the environment, and communities throughout the project.
  • Reduce the risk of costly project delays.
  • Keep the line in compliance with company, industry, and regulatory requirements.
  • Launch a new line integrity program.

Because they are efficient, effective, and easy to launch and retrieve, pigs are the preferred tools for a variety of pipeline maintenance and integrity activities related to flow reversals, product changes, and conversions to service.

From cleaning and gauging to liquids displacement and preparation for pre-inline inspection (ILI), TDW can help Offshore Pipeline operators select and deploy the appropriate pig for the purpose, pipeline, and product.

Pigs for cleaning and pre-ILI preparation:

  • OptionALL™ cleaning pig – Effective for cleaning, maintenance, batching, and displacement. Can be customized with attachments appropriate for clearing pipeline solids, including discs, cups, magnets, brushes, and blades.
  • VANTAGE® V cleaning pig – A multi-use pig that can be equipped with brushes to remove hard, crust-like deposits, urethane blades for removing gummy deposits, scraper discs to clean both hard and soft deposits, and magnet kits to remove ferrous material.
  • PitBoss™ cleaning pig – Designed to remove soft to medium-hard deposits from internal pits.
  • FJR/JRN cleaning pig – Equipped with wire brushes and urethane cups to remove contaminants and deposits from pipelines.
  • VANTAGE®+ cleaning pig – Multi-use pigs that can remove hard internal pipe deposits such as mill scale, crust, and calcium deposits as well as thick, soft contaminants including sludge and mud.
  • REDSKIN™ foam pig – Available in five different configurations, including the REDSKIN RoughRider® pig for removing hard deposits.
  • WCK cleaning pig – Built to remove pipeline contaminants and deposits, with an outlet port at the pig’s front end to prevent loosened material from piling up. Available in a dual diameter model for cleaning multiple sizes of pipe in one run.
  • Pencil brush cleaning pig – Heavy duty, aggressive, and effective at removing black powder and cleaning deposits from internal pits. Removable bypass plugs provide jetting action to improve cleaning effectiveness.

Pigs for gauging deformation:

Pigs for liquids displacement:

  • UNISPHERE™ pig – Heavy-duty inflatable spheres that remove liquid hydrocarbons and water from pipelines and piping systems.
  • OptionALL™ batching pig  Designed for light cleaning, line filling and dewatering, batch separation, and liquid removal.
  • VANTAGE® V batching pig – Used for batching, displacing, and light cleaning.
  • X-Pig® multi-purpose utility tool  Flexible and versatile all-urethane pig that can negotiate tight pipeline turns. Appropriate for cleaning, batching, and displacement operations.
  • VANTAGE® + pig – Can be used for batching and displacement. Flexible in tight bend pipelines and can traverse a 20 percent reduction in interior pipe diameter.

Flow reversals, product changes, and conversion to service can impact pipeline integrity by altering the conditions under which a pipeline operates. As part of establishing new service, Offshore Pipeline operators rely on advanced inline inspection (ILI) technology to assess and characterize any existing anomalies to help provide a baseline for monitoring and future pipeline assessments.

The high degree of accuracy in ILI tools from TDW can help pipeline owners and operators avoid multiple inspection runs and unnecessary excavations, saving time while lowering operational risks and costs.

  • Multiple Dataset (MDS) platform Combines multiple technologies including Deformation, High Field Axial MFL, SpirALL® MFL, Low Field MFL and XYZ Mapping to generate comprehensive, critical information in one tool run. Can assess a pipeline for bore reductions, metal loss, long seam defects, mechanical damage, hard spots and more in a single inspection.
  • SpirALL® Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) – Optimizes the number of receivers and transmitters through the use of a helical magnetic field. Inspects for axially oriented crack/crack-like defects such as stress corrosion cracking and hook cracks that are below the detectable limit of SMFL.
  • XYZ Mapping (XYZ) – Supplies highly accurate location information about every defect and pipe feature reported. Offers the ability to calculate bending strain by pairing global positioning system (GPS) coordinates with inertial mapping.
  • Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) – High resolution technology that detects and sizes volumetric features such as metal loss. Utilized primarily in small diameter liquids pipelines.
  • Gas magnetic flux leakage (GMFL) – High resolution technology that can detect and sizes volumetric features such as metal loss. Utilized primarily in natural gas pipelines.
  • Deformation (DEF) technology – High resolution tool that efficiently detects dents and other minute bore reductions, with accuracy to calculate dent strain and prioritize plain dents.
  • KALIPER® 360 – Captures baseline bore assessment information for new construction, as well as geometry data for in-service pipelines.

TDW offers safe, proven hot tapping and plugging (HT&P) solutions for the Offshore Pipeline market.  When pipeline owners and operators need to expand their lines, make connections and/or tie-ins, launch new services, or upgrade their capacity, the TDW team of experienced technicians can help.

The HT&P process incorporates a high pressure pipeline fitting, valve, tapping machine and isolation equipment – all working together to provide a safe and proven isolation solution. Once the area of pipeline that requires work has been safely isolated and evacuated, the line modification can be performed.

The full suite of isolation solutions offered by TDW plays a critical role in this process. The TDW STOPPLE® Train isolation system, for example, uses double block and bleed technology to help increase efficiency and safety during pipeline modification. The system – which is able to create a double block and bleed seal through a single fitting – reduces costs associated with fittings, valves, welding, and inspection services. The bleed port affixed on the line ensures that any product that bypasses the first seal is captured and evacuated through the bleed port, which creates a safe zone in high-consequence areas.

Whether operators are purchasing equipment to perform their own HT&P jobs or turning to TDW to execute the service, they can rely on the TDW line of equipment and consumables. The Subsea 1200RC tapping machine, for example, is a topside-driven hot tap machine that can be safely operated down to a depth of 3,000 meters (9842.5 feet). The machine has proven to be a highly reliable shallow and deep-water solution.

TDW can also partner with operators before the work begins, providing consulting services to help them make optimum use of TDW products and services. TDW application engineers are recognized industry experts, ready to assist operators through each project phase – from start to finish.
