Ground displacement – which can be caused by soil erosion, a landslide, or an earthquake – poses considerable threats to pipelines. The resulting damage can range from deformation to bending strain to pipeline failure.

If damage does occur, TDW can help pipeline owners and operators assess the problem and pinpoint the areas that will need work. When repairs or line replacements are necessary, TDW can also provide the equipment and services needed to return the line to full service.

Through advanced inline inspection (ILI) technology to detect and characterize areas of pipeline strain and other damage caused by soil erosion and displacement, TDW helps Offshore Pipeline operators avoid multiple inspection runs and unnecessary excavations, saving time while lowering operational risks and costs. 

  • XYZ mapping (XYZ) – Supplies highly accurate pipeline mapping data for the calculation of bending strain and pipe displacement. Also provides highly accurate location information about every defect reported by pairing global positioning system (GPS) coordinates with inertial mapping.
  • Deformation (DEF) – Efficiently detects dents and other minute bore reductions, with accuracy to calculate dent strain. XYZ Mapping can be integrated to assess bending strain caused by pipe displacement.
  • Multiple Dataset (MDS) platform  Combines multiple technologies, including XYZ Mapping, to generate comprehensive, critical information in a single tool run.
  • Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) – Detects and sizes volumetric corrosion features and can be equipped with XYZ Mapping. Utilized primarily in small diameter liquids pipelines.
  • Gas magnetic flux leakage (GMFL) – Detects and sizes volumetric corrosion features and can be equipped with XYZ Mapping. Utilized primarily in natural gas pipelines.

In the Offshore Pipeline market, safety is of the utmost importance. During planned shutdowns, hot tapping and plugging (HT&P) technology allows operators to complete topside pipeline replacements and modifications – from making lines piggable to line lowering and relocations – with minimal flow interruption.

The HT&P process incorporates a high pressure fitting, valve, tapping machine, and isolation equipment – all working together to provide a safe and proven isolation solution. Once the area of pipeline that needs work has been safely isolated and evacuated, the line modification can be performed.

The full suite of isolation solutions by TDW plays a critical role in this process. The STOPPLE® Train Plugging System, for example, uses double block and bleed technology to help increase efficiency and safety during pipeline maintenance and repair. This approach to line isolation, which can create a double block and bleed seal through a single fitting, reduces costs associated with fittings, valves, welding, and inspection services. The bleed port affixed on the line ensures that any product that bypasses the first seal is captured and evacuated through the bleed port, which creates a safe zone within high-consequence areas. 

Whether operators are purchasing equipment to perform their own HT&P jobs or turning to TDW to execute the service, they can rely on the company’s line of equipment and consumables. The Subsea 1200RC tapping machine, for example, is a topside-driven hot tap machine that can be safely operated down to a depth of 3,000 meters (9842.5 feet). The machine has proven to be a highly reliable shallow and deep-water solution.

If soil erosion displaces or damages a segment of pipeline, non-intrusive inline isolation technology makes it possible for Offshore Pipeline operators to safely isolate for repair without the need to bleed down the entire line

  • SmartPlug® isolation technology – The TDW double block and monitor SmartPlug tool is a remotely controlled and operated, non-tethered pipeline isolation system for oil and gas pipelines. It helps protect people, assets, and the environment while saving time and money compared to the temporary decommissioning of the entire pipeline. In addition, SmartPlug non-intrusive inline isolation technology enables local hydrotesting of the replaced/repaired area without affecting the integrity of the initial isolation, which can be held in place. The SmartPlug tool also allows production and flow of other lines tied in to the downstream section of the isolated pipeline to continue uninterrupted.
