Offshore pipelines located near shipping lanes and fishing vessel traffic have an increased risk of impact damage from anchors and other objects being dropped onto or dragged across them. The dents, non-linear deformations, and ovalities that result from this form of third-party damage can affect pipeline productivity and safety.

If the pipeline is still piggable or post damage inspection is required, TDW provides engineering services, cleaning and geometry measurement services, as well as both intrusive and non-intrusive inline isolation solutions to help Offshore Pipeline operators bring their assets back to full operation.



Provided the line is still piggable, pigging to determine if mechanical damage is present or prior to non-intrusive inline isolation helps Offshore Pipeline operators accurately gauge the size of defects and clean the pipeline so repairs or section replacement can be performed. TDW offers a wide range of pigs for both gauging and cleaning.

Pigs for gauging deformation:

  • OptionALL™ SO-G gauging pig – Designed for pipelines from 4 inches through 14 inches, OptionALL gauging pigs are available with multiple gauge plates, providing complete information in a single run.
  • VANTAGE® LV—G gauging pig – For pipelines 16 inches and larger, VANTAGE® LV-G combines the strength and durability of the steel-bodied VANTAGE® V steel cleaning pig with proven aluminum gauging discs.
  • Polly-G REDSKIN™ pig – This is available in medium- and high-density foam with aluminum gauging plate bolted on.
  • X-Pig® multi-purpose utility tool – This versatile, one-piece tool is molded from TDW proprietary Formula SI™ urethane, available with optional bolted-on gauging plate.

Cleaning pigs:

  • VANTAGE® V cleaning pig – This multi-use pig is designed to remove both hard, crust-like and soft, gummy deposits, as well as ferrous materials.
  • PitBoss™ cleaning pig – This removes soft to medium-hard deposits from internal pits.
  • WCK cleaning pig – This removes contaminants and deposits that increase resistance to flow in smaller pipelines.
  • Pencil brush pig – This rids pipelines of finely divided black powder that has accumulated as the result of corrosion on steel pipe walls as well as hard scale deposits
  • REDKSIN™ foam pig – Made of a high quality, high density urethane foam, this pig is designed for longer use.
  • OptionALL™ cleaning pig – Effective for cleaning, maintenance, batching, and displacement, the OptionAll™ cleaning pig can be customized with attachments appropriate for clearing pipeline solids, including discs, cups, magnets, brushes, and blades.
  • FJR/JRN cleaning pig – This comes equipped with wire brushes and urethane cups to remove contaminants and deposits from pipelines.
  • VANTAGE®+ cleaning pig – This multi-use pig can remove hard internal pipe deposits such as mill scale, crust, and calcium deposits as well as thick, soft contaminants including sludge and mud.

Because critical pipeline repairs often call for hot tapping and plugging (HT&P) solutions, TDW offers Emergency Pipeline Repair Systems (EPRS) that help pipeline owners and operators respond promptly to crisis situations while minimizing their risks and losses.

TDW partners with clients to develop an EPRS customized to their unique environments, products, and pipelines. The process begins with a thorough risk assessment and gap analysis that considers every aspect of their operation, from pipeline pressure to access to weather conditions. From there, TDW develops the resulting data into a custom emergency response plan.

Once the plan is in place, TDW gathers the necessary equipment, including tapping machines, high-pressure fittings, valves, and isolation systems. As long as the EPRS is active, TDW stores the supplies and keeps the equipment well maintained, up-to-date, and ready when needed.

The ability to take a proactive approach to emergency pipeline repair has proven highly valuable in the Offshore Pipeline market. A seemingly small leak or defect can easily escalate to a catastrophic situation that requires the immediate mobilization of critical materials, equipment, resources, and services.

Investing in an EPRS allows offshore pipeline owners and operators to deliver an appropriate response to emergency situations — from leaks to stuck pigs — in the shortest time possible. As a result, employees, the environment, and company assets are protected, and costly downtime is kept to a minimum.


Removing dents or other defects typically requires repairing or replacing entire pipeline sections. TDW provides Offshore Pipeline operators with non-intrusive inline isolations that enable work to be done at full line pressure.

  • SmartPlug® isolation technology – The TDW double block and monitor SmartPlug tool is a remotely controlled and operated, non-tethered pipeline isolation system for oil and gas pipelines. It protects people, assets, and the environment while saving time and money compared to the temporary decommissioning of the entire pipeline. In addition, SmartPlug technology enables local hydrotesting of the replaced/repaired area without affecting the integrity of the initial isolation, which can be held in place. The SmartPlug tool also allows production and flow of other lines tied in to the downstream section of the isolated pipeline to continue uninterrupted. SmartPlug isolation tools are tracked and identified by the SmartTrack™ two-way communication system. The SmartTrack system is capable of through-wall communication in any pipeline medium and can operate in pipelines up to 50 millimeters (approximately 2 inches) thick. The system also allows for extremely precise tool positioning, with accuracy of +/- 25 millimeters (approximately 1 inch), depending upon the environment.
