Loss of ground support (e.g., geological faults, river or sea bed movement, etc.) can result in strain in the pipe wall. These strains can result in geometric defects such as ovality, dents, wrinkles etc. that can affect the structural integrity of the pipeline and, potentially, lead to failure.

Through advanced inline inspection (ILI) technology to detect and characterize bending strain and other potential impacts to pipeline integrity with a high degree of accuracy, TDW helps Liquids Transmission operators avoid multiple inspection runs and unnecessary excavations, saving time while lowering operational risks and costs

  • XYZ mapping (XYZ) – High resolution Inertial Mapping Units (IMUs) permit accurate determination of pipeline bending strain. When paired with other technologies, XYZ Mapping also supplies highly accurate location information about every defect and pipe feature reported by pairing global positioning system (GPS) coordinates with inertial mapping.
  • Deformation (DEF) technology – High resolution tool that efficiently detects dents and other minute bore reductions, with accuracy to calculate dent strain and prioritize plain dents. DEF can also be equipped with high resolution mapping to calculate bending strain in addition to other features.
  • Multiple Dataset (MDS) platform  Combines multiple technologies including deformation, high field axial magnetic flux leakage (MFL), SpirALL® MFL, low field MFL, and XYZ mapping to generate comprehensive, critical information in one tool run. MDS can assess a pipeline for bending strain, bore reductions, metal loss, long seam defects, mechanical damage, hard spots, and more – in a single inspection.
  • Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) – High resolution technology that detects and sizes volumetric features such as metal loss; utilized primarily in small diameter liquids pipelines. MFL can also be equipped with high resolution mapping to calculate bending strain in addition to other features.
  • Gas magnetic flux leakage (GMFL) – High resolution technology that detects and sizes volumetric features such as metal loss; utilized primarily in natural gas pipelines. GMFL can also be equipped with high resolution mapping to calculate bending strain in addition to other features.

In the Liquids Transmission market, where pipeline shutdown often is not an option, TDW offers safe and efficient hot tapping and plugging (HT&P) solutions for a wide array of pipeline defects and maintenance challenges, from dents to corrosion to valve failure. 

The HT&P process incorporates a high pressure pipeline fitting, valve, tapping machine, and isolation equipment – all working together to provide a safe and proven isolation solution. Once the area of pipeline that needs work has been safely isolated and evacuated, the line modification can be performed.

TDW isolation technology plays a critical role in this process and, combined with a temporary bypass, allows work to be performed without the need to stop product flow. The TDW STOPPLE® Train isolation system, for example, uses double block and bleed technology to help increase efficiency and safety during pipeline modification. This approach to line isolation, which only requires a single pipeline tap, reduces costs associated with fittings, valves, welding, and inspection services. The bleed port affixed on the line ensures that any product that bypasses the first seal is contained and evacuated through the bleed port, which helps operators better protect people and the environment.
