Because they are efficient, effective, and easy to launch and retrieve, pigs are the preferred tools for a variety of post-construction/pre-commissioning tasks when new pipeline sections are being put into service or new connections are being tied-in. Among other activities, pigs are used for cleaning out construction and other debris, gauging to ensure the pipeline is free of defects, and dewatering after hydrostatic testing. 

TDW can help Hydrocarbon Processing operators select and deploy the appropriate pig for the purpose, pipeline, and product.

Pigs for pre-commissioning cleaning:

  • REDSKIN™ foam pig – Used for light cleaning.
  • OptionAll™ cleaning pig Effective for cleaning, maintenance, batching, and displacement; can be customized with attachments appropriate for clearing pipeline solids, including discs, cups, magnets, brushes, and blades.

Pigs for gauging deformation:

  • OptionAll™ SO-G gauging pig – Designed for pipelines from 4 inches through 14 inches; available with multiple gauge plates, providing clearance information in a single run.
  • VANTAGE® LV-G pig For pipelines 16 inches and larger; combines the strength and durability of the steel-bodied VANTAGE® V steel cleaning pig with our proven aluminum gauging discs.

  • X-Pig® multi-purpose utility tool Flexible and versatile all-urethane pig that can negotiate tight pipeline turns. Appropriate for cleaning, batching, and displacement operations.
  • VANTAGE® + pig – Can be used for batching and displacement. Flexible in tight bend pipelines and can traverse a 20 percent reduction in interior pipe diameter.

In the Hydrocarbon Processing market, where hundreds – or thousands – of employees often work in close quarters, and capital investments may be in the hundreds of millions – or even low billions – of dollars, safe pipeline repairs are of utmost importance. TDW offers safe, proven hot tapping and plugging (HT&P) solutions that allow pipeline owners and operators to expand lines, make connections and tie-ins, launch new services, and upgrade capacity – all while their line is in service

The HT&P process incorporates a low pressure pipeline fitting, valve, tapping machine, and isolation equipment  – all working together to provide a safe and proven isolation solution. Once the area of pipeline that requires work has been safely isolated and evacuated, the line modification can be performed.

The full suite of isolation solutions offered by TDW plays a critical role in this process. The TDW STOPPLE® Train isolation system, for example, uses double block and bleed technology to help increase efficiency and safety during pipeline modification. The system – which only requires a single pipeline tap – reduces costs associated with fittings, valves, welding, and inspection services. The bleed port affixed on the line ensures that any product that bypasses the first seal is contained and evacuated through the bleed port, which creates a safe zone in high-consequence areas.

Because double block and bleed technology can play such a significant role in protecting people, the environment, and communities, a number of petroleum refineries have made this technology mandatory.
