When dealing with the multitude of pigging tasks associated with maintaining a healthy pipeline system, operators now have the power of “X” on their side. A new TDW pipeline pig is being introduced to the world as the XPig, a multi-purpose, affordable and disposable pipeline utility tool. Typically something that is so exceptionally versatile and hard working would be called a “workhorse” but we are talking about a pig after all. Mixed metaphors aside, the XPig tool is aptly named because it does so many things so well. How many things? A lot actually, and we keep thinking of new applications all the time. The ultimate number of beneficial uses, capabilities and options is truly an unknown - symbolized by the letter X. The message in short is that operators can take this well-designed, sturdily-constructed utility pig and put it to work X-number of ways.
Even though the XPig tool has been designed to serve as a highly functional, yet disposable utility pig, the durability and extended life of this pig is going to come as a welcome improvement to operators. The XPig tool’s cast body is made of TDW Formula SI urethane, which means that the XPig tool offers a decided advantage before it enters its first launcher.

Gauging option for the XPig Tool
In developing Formula SI urethane, TDW engineers and chemists evaluated and analyzed 30 different urethane compounds in their search for a material that increases pig reliability. After examining the results of tests that included approximately 900 controlled runs, it was determined that Formula SI provides superior physical properties in critical areas such as resistance to abrasion and hydrolysis an especially important consideration in hot, moist environments. Compression set and resilience properties are also improved. As a result, the TDW XPig tool is better at maintaining its shape and offers excellent operational performance from start to finish.
As a displacement tool, XPig can be effectively utilized during commissioning or de-commissioning procedures and can be pushed with nitrogen or water. XPig tools can be used for nitrogen purges and can isolate a section of line for replacement. It will push water during hydrotesting and remove water from low spots in gas and product lines. Optional TDW RealSeal® rear cups provide superior sealing characteristics.
Variations to the basic XPig tool can include the addition of one or more brushes for cleaning and the XPig tool is the only pipeline pig of its type to offer a gauging option. The XPig tool will traverse and seal while going around 1.5 DR bends better than a rigid body pig. It has proven to be very effective in cleaning jet fuel lines at airports where there are an abundance of elbows to negotiate. The hollow body of an XPig tool can house a transmitter or trip magnets that activate non-intrusive PIG-SIG® passage indicators.
To compensate for heavier-walled offshore pipe, the XPig tool is machined to match the specific ID of each pipeline. The front disc or cup on each XPig tool is made slightly smaller to make it easier to launch.

Adding a bypass option to the XPig tool makes it more efficient for cleaning. The bypass allows a strong streaming action to flow forward from behind the XPig tool. Fluids jet outward at a higher velocity than the movement of the pig and keep solids in suspension ahead of the pig.

To allow line operators the ability to precisely match the desired performance characteristics of the XPig tool to its intended task, TDW offers five durometers, or hardness levels ranging from 85 to 65. The industry standard selection of hardness offerings is typically within the 85 to 80 range.
|
| XPig tool features that provide extended versatility include: |
- Available in three basic configurations (4” to 12”)
1. One cup and five discs
2. Two cups and four discs
3. Five discs / bi-directional option
|
- " Optional RealSeal® cups on the rear feature multiple sealing lips for a more effective seal throughout a pipeline run. Designed to offer the most effective sealing surface of any cups on the market, they are particularly effective for nitrogen purges, commissioning or filling and dewatering for hydrostatic testing, batch separation, reducing interface contamination and increasing profitability by recovering product left behind in product change-over.
- Optional offshore design
- Optional configuration to hold transmitters or trip magnets
- Optional stainless steel or poly brushes
- Optional solid core
