And Now, By Popular Demand,
Inline Inspection Support Services From TDW
by Bob Warterfield

It is always very gratifying to know that your customers think highly of the products and services you provide. It becomes an exceptionally rewarding experience when your customers ask you to expand into a related area of business because they want something that they have not had in the past: a one stop, all-inclusive package of top quality, reliable and cost efficient ILI services. To complete our package, we have introduced ILI support services from TDW; a fleet of fully equipped mobile units that directly service MAGPIE® In-Line Inspection activities in the field.

ILI all-terain tracking capabilities

Services offered by TDW involve preparations and activities conducted prior to, and during, MAGPIE MFL or deformation inspections.  The list of TDW ILI support functions include:

  • AGM (Above Ground Marker) Site Selection
  • GPS Surveying
  • AGM Deployment
  • Pig Tracking and Locating
  • AGM Retrieval
  • GPS Data Logging

ILI support service tasks in the pipeline inspection process were traditionally contracted, almost exclusively, through third party providers having no direct working relationship with ILI service providers. Although technically different than ILI service, pre-inspection activities are integral to the ILI process and can directly affect the quality and accuracy of ILI findings.

In terms of ILI efficiency, there can be a significant benefit to pipeline operators if pre-inspection service providers work in close harmony with ILI service providers. Unfortunately, most do not. Selecting the right service company can strongly work to an operators' favor if their pre-inspection service company offers direct access to high-level technical resources with the capability of handling unexpected line problems, as well as in-house engineering expertise to design custom solutions for line-specific situations - a depth of service that virtually none of the third party pre-inspection services can offer. TDW backs both MAGPIE and ILI support services with over 85 years of global pipeline maintenance experience in every type of location and environment.

ILI support services from TDW focus on making sure that every MAGPIE inline inspection produces the most accurate information possible and that it does
so with first run success. The ILI support process starts with AGM site selection.
Site selection involves careful review of maps and terrain characteristics to determine factors such as depth of coverage, power line interference, negative roadway influences and accessibility of right-of-way. GPS surveying establishes precise, logged points along a pipeline route that serve to enhance tool detection and the accuracy of anomaly location. The use of global positioning satellites allows TDW to place AGMs to within sub-meter accuracy.

Prior to launch, ILI tools and AGMs are synchronized with exact atomic time. AGMs
located along the pipeline route and activated in preparation to detect pig passage utilize highly reliable Bluetooth® communications technology. AGMs track the progression of an ILI tool through a pipeline. Should the tool stop for any reason, its location will be determined between the last AGM site passed and the AGM site yet to signal passage. As pigs pass AGM sites, the AGM is collected and the time of passage at each location is documented.

Once an ILI inspection is complete, a detailed report is created by TDW support services that provides the longitude and latitude of AGM locations. The accuracy of the report assists in locating specific pipeline anomalies with greater precision and can actually save line operators excessive excavation costs. Surface photos of each site and instructions on how to access specified locations via roads and right-of-way easements are also provided.

TDW pipeline truck fleet

A fleet of new 4-wheel drive trucks with a full compliment of technicians, support equipment, computers and ATVs, is already rolling and providing comprehensive ILI support services in all types of terrain. Mexico has one of the largest pipeline operation and distribution networks in Latin America, with over 45,000 km. of transmission pipelines.

New Video Release

The fully updated "What is Tapping & Plugging?"video premiered during the recent TDW North America Sales Conference in Tulsa. The three-minute animation demonstrates all of the key steps involved with a typical tapping, plugging and bypass project performed on a transmission line.

Consulting engineers for the project were Eric Freeman, Dave Hicks and Tony Garrison. The animator was Darold Oniwa. The animation was created using Lightwave and Infinity applications. The audio/sound effects track was designed and mixed by TDW Video Production Manager, Rick Herrmann.
