In June of 2006, TDW Offshore Services was called upon to assist a major pipeline operator in plugging the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) near T'bilisi, Georgia, (Former Soviet Union). A leaking isolation joint called for an urgent repair.  The operator chose the SmartPlug™ system as the ideal tool for temporarily plugging part of the pipeline system to allow repair of the isolation joint. Within only seven days from receiving a call from the pipeline operator, TDW Offshore mobilized a 42-inch, dual module SmartPlug tool to T’bilisi. The leaking isolation joint was located approximately 30 meters from a pig trap. Upon arrival on site, the SmartPlug tool was loaded into the pig trap, pigged into position downstream of the faulty joint and activated. Elapsed time from launching the SmartPlug tool until issuance of the isolation certificate was only eight hours. The SmartPlug tool isolated only the section between the pig trap and the isolation joint, allowing the rest of the pipeline to stay pressurized and in operation. Although the SmartPlug tool was originally designed for technically challenging offshore conditions, pipeline operators are realizing that there are also excellent applications for onshore maintenance and rehabilitation situations.  The recent project in Georgia is a perfect example.  "This was the first onshore issued project ever delivered to this particular customer in this area," says Kenneth Jekteberg, Sales Manager Europe for TDW Offshore. "We believe the market potential is large and this job represents a breakthrough into a new market in a new geographical region," Jekteberg continued. Maintenance operations like this would normally cause the operator to blow down the entire transportation pipeline in question. Instead, working on very short notice, TDW Offshore utilized the SmartPlug system to create a temporary double block-and-bleed barrier against the gas in the pipeline.  The problem was resolved quickly and effectively. The SCP Commissioning Team Leader in Azerbaijan said to TDW Offshore after the project, "Your method of crating the equipment to incorporate a pig cradle and loading facility contributed to a speedy set up on site, and the performance and professionalism of your site personnel enabled the tool to be safely set at a difficult location and then recovered after repair works were completed. Well Done." Facts of the TDW Offshore project in Georgia: Purpose of Plugging: Isolate pipeline for repair of leaking joint Pipeline Details: 42 inch Isolation Pressure: 22 bar (319 psi) Isolation Position: 30 metres from pig launcher Duration of Isolation: 18 days Pigging medium: SmartPlug™ tool was pigged into position using Nitrogen Tracking & Positioning: SmartTrack™ system was used for tracking and positioning of the SmartPlug The second TDW Offshore project was very much an opposite set of circumstances from the Georgia project because it required long-term vigilance rather than urgent action.  The situation involved the isolation of a hurricane damaged pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico.  Original crew members were mobilized in mid-May of 2006 and were projected to handle the situation in approximately a week.  As a result of damage sustained from hurricanes the previous year, a section of pipeline had to be replaced.  Waiting on stand-by for nearly two months on a platform while the line section was being replaced, the TDW Offshore crew was given a go-ahead to do their part.  After the pipeline section had been replaced, a hydrotest was performed.  The client wanted TDW Offshore Services on site to provide a 20” SmartPlug tool to isolate topside valves from hydrotest pressure to prevent damage.  The SmartPlug tool was successfully set twice without removal from the pipeline on July 2 and July 12, as required by the client.  The client on the platform stated that the TDW Offshore crew were professional, they were not a burden even though they had to endure a lot of standby time, they were a pleasure to have onboard and he enjoyed working with all of them. In both instances, in Georgia and in the Gulf of Mexico, TDW Offshore responded to customer needs with the right technology, experienced and knowledgeable technicians, and accomplished their assigned tasks within the time frame required.
