TDW Field Services Moves Major Water Line An on-going project at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is to significantly expand the number of daily flight operations. In developing this expansion plan, many flow charts were proposed, each having a list of successive tasks to be done in a specific order. One such flow chart required expanding and widening the major expressway providing passenger access to the terminals. However, before that could be done, an existing railroad overpass had to be moved. The process of widening the expressway and moving the railroad overpass required that a 48-inch pre-stressed concrete water main serving the airport and surrounding communities would have to be relocated without loss of water service to the airport or communities it served. TDW Model 1200 Tapping Machine taps 36" hole in water line It's at this point that TDW Field Services entered the picture. TDW was contacted to help design the relocation of the water line without interruption of service. TDW Field Technicians installed two 48 x 36-inch concrete tapping saddles on the 48-inch line. Tapping valves were installed on the saddles and two 36-inch horizontal taps into the concrete pipe were successfully completed. A new, parallel ductile iron pipe system was added, connections made to the two tapped fittings, and water flow routed through the new section. The old section of 48" concrete pipe was isolated using existing in-line valves and filled with grout. This paved the way for relocating the railroad track over the abandoned pipe. All work was accomplished without system shutdown. TDW field technicians installed the tapping saddles, assisted in mounting the tapping valves and performed the taps. Taps were performed on successive weekends to assure system flow characteristics were at consistent demand rates. Approximately five hours were required to tap through the 4-inch reinforced concrete. TDW performed the work in conjunction with Alfred Benesch Engineers and Benchmark Construction Co. for the City of Chicago Water Department. The work was completed on time without problems, checking off one more item on the flow chart. Borucki Heads EAM Region TDW President and CEO Pete Samoff has announced the promotion of Andre Borucki to General Manager, Europe, Africa and Middle East Region, effective August 1. Borucki replaces Jean-Paul Van Schandevijl, who has retired. Under Borucki's leadership, the EAM Region of TDW will continue to provide the same high level of quality products and services that has been the hallmark of operations under Van Schandevijl. Andre Borucki began his employment with TDW in 1991 and brings extensive experience and knowledge of TDW products and services, as well as our markets and customers, to this new role. Initially, Borucki was a Sales Administrator, and over the years, served in several capacities, including Hot Tapping and Plugging Services Sales Administrator, France Sales Manager, and his latest assignment as Commercial Director of the EAM Region.
